Nunan's Wins at Topsfield Fair

Nunan's Landscaping division won 'The Challange Award' for the most meritorious landscape exhibit in the category of large landscape displays. There were six competitors this year. The winner is chosen based on creativity, unique design, choice in plant material, installation and construction technique along with quality and suitabilty of plant material. All materials used needed to be of top quality and work together.

This was the first time our Landscape Division has ever entered. We designed it on site.

The idea was to have a landscaped space that was relaxing and peaceful. It needed to be a place where people would relax in a unique and colorful environment. We decided to build a patio out of oversized, native flagstone. we built it around a tree, so as to have the dappled shade of it's canopie over a small seating area. We created a dry river bed meandering its way through the center of the patio and placed the largest of the stones over the river as a non elevated bridge as to not interupt movement across the patio. Rather than using water, which unless naturally occuring, would need power and would create cost to a client, we decided to mimic water with the planting of 'Black Scallop' Ajuga groundcover along the rivers center. It had a great look to it, and simulated actual water perfectly. We used a variety of textured evergreens, Grasses, and deciduous plants that we thought would create a secluded space and we incorporated some annuals to provide just the right accent of color. we used all native stone in the river bed, as well as the patio. We also used top quality plant material from our own Nursery. We set up the table and chairs on the patio, which we restored and painted, we placed a basket of apples, a couple bottles of Hard Cider, and a scrabble game with the opponents letters spelling out 'Topsfield' and 'Fair'. we thought it might make one think that maybe a couple had sat there drinking some Hard Cider passing the time with a game of scrabble, while relaxing by their River of Ajuga.

We had a great time both designing and creating this space and look forward to next year.
